Winger Inside Run

Description:  Positioning drill for a striker check to a winger inside run.


Application: Game like scenarios for players to practice their movement.





FOR EXERCISE 1

Players: 5+ | Difficulty: 3


Instructions





  1. Player A passes the ball to a checking at an angle Player B.

  2. Player B bounces the ball back to Player A, who made a run at an angle.

  3. At the same time , Player C has started to make a run inside.

  4. Player B passes the ball to the cutting inside Player C.

  5. After faking a shot, Player C plays one of the two runs.

Runs

Player A : Holds back.

Player B: Penalty spot / top of the 18 yard box.

Player C: Back post. Player D: Crossing


Setup


  • 4 Cones : 1 for the forward, two for the wingers, one for the midfielder.

  • 1 Goal.

  • Lots of balls.


Rotation


  • A - B - C - D



Coaching Points




  • Remind them that this is just one scenario out of hundreds, but the drill helps improve movement on and off the ball.

  • Players opening up at an angle for the pass.

  • Players calling for the ball.

  • Players making eye contact with other players as they "claim" their runs.

  • The timing of each players movements.

  • Players masking their runs into the box.

  • Player D chases the ball.

FOR EXERCISE 2

Players: 5+ | Difficulty: 3


Instructions





  1. Player A passes the ball to a checking at an angle Player B.

  2. Player A then runs to the opposite asking for a pass back, but does not receive it.

  3. Player B plays a pass out wide down the line for Player C.

  4. Player C receives the pass, then dribbles down before playing a pass/cross to one of the three runs into the box.

Runs

Player A : Continues their run towards the penalty spot/front post.

Player B: Top of the 18 yard box.

Player C: Crossing.

Player D: Back post.


Setup


  • 4 Cones : 1 for the forward, two for the wingers, one for the midfielder.

  • 1 Goal.

  • Lots of balls.
