Players: 4+ | Difficulty: 1 |

Description:  Counter Attack and Shoot

Application: Attackers gain confidence in quick attacks on the counter, while defenders work on positioning.

FOR EXERCISE 1

Players: 4+ | Difficulty: 1

Instructions

BASED ON EXAMPLE DRAWING

  1. The Blue Player dribbles the ball from the post, to take a shot at the keeper in the other goal.

  2. As soon as they take their shot, they must run, touch the post, and then recover to defend against the counter attacking Red Player.

  3. The Red Player may start dribbling as soon as the Blue Player touches the post.

  4. The Red Player takes a shot on target on the break, than immediately runs to touch the post. The Blue Player leaves the pitch and gets their ball.

  5. As soon as the Red Player touches the post, another Blue Player will start a counter attack to goal with the Red Player hot on their tail to recover.

Setup

  • 2 Goals and a grid.

  • Balls on the sides of each goal.

Rules

  • The shooting player must touch the post before the attacker can start dribbling.

Rotation

  • Players get back into their lines after defending and retrieving their balls.

Coaching Points

  • Players should do their best to out pace their defenders on the counter, but if they cant, make sure they don't take too long to get a shot off.

  • Players keep their touches under control on the break.

  • Players place their shoots with composure and deception on the break.

  • The defender recovers into a good position to cut off the attacking player.

FOR EXERCISE 2

Players: 4+ | Difficulty: 1

Instructions

EVERYTHING IS THE SAME AS EXERCISE 1 EXCEPT:

  • The attacker doesn't have to touch the post after taking a shot.

  • The next attacker can start dribbling as soon as the attacker shoots.

Coaching Points

  • With this exercise, defenders should be able to position themselves slightly better than the previous, making it harder for the attackers.

  • Defenders should work on their 1v1, last defender positioning.

  • Make sure players shoot when the opportunity arises, and don't take too long.
